2018

BROTHERS JOHANSONS

with Jaak, Ants and Mart Johanson

Johansons
have been singing together since the 60-s. Kärt, as the youngest, joined later.
Jaak has studied at the Drama School at Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, Ants and Mart philology and biology at the University Tartu, Kärt studied theatre at The Estonian Institute of Humanities (EHI) of Tallinn University. Professions and activities have varied from actor to theatre director, teacher to chancellor, cultural organizer to crisis counselor.
What’s important is that music and singing has continued to be a joint space of fellowship to get together, think together, turn to others together through various times, callings and challenges.
It can be said that we sing sacred folk songs. In the folkloric meaning of the phrase as well as that we as musicians are non-professionals (the folk) and most of the songs we have written are a way to turn towards the unknown, eternity, longing.

Krista Citra Joonas
started her road as a musician as a saxophone player. She received her education through Heino Eller Tartu Music School, Georg Ots Tallinn Music School, Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre and Musichochschule in Zurich Switzerland. Today she is mostly known as a bansuri player (Indian classical bamboo flute). She has studied this instrument, that is quite uncommon in Estonia, in India under the legendary bansuri player Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia for over 15 years already and given concerts in India, across Europe and in Estonia. In Estonia it is possible to hear her play mostly with Jaak Johanson besides classical Indian music concerts. In 2014, Citra’s solo album came out, which features mostly her own works. In addition, Citra’s bansuri can be heard on about twenty albums and she has played together with several fantastic Estonian musicians like Siiri Sisask, Sven Grünberg, Tõnis Mägi, Meelis Vind, Johansonid, Riho Sibul, Jaak Tuksam, Ain Agan, Mart Soo etc. Krista Citra Joonas teaches saxophone and bansuri at the VHK Music School as her day-to-day job.
